Global Jazz Mission

CALENDAR UPDATED: 2/20/04

Hi Everyone -                                         skip to calendar

Happy Valentine's Day and President's Day!

Personal Update

For those of you who don't know yet, I'm recovering from whiplash after being rear-ended in a 2nd car accident on January 3rd. (I've heard quite a few bulls-eye-on-the-bumper jokes!) It was a hit-and-run and I'm still waiting for it all to be resolved. It's been a tough, frustrating time that's definitely been testing my patience and sense of humor! All your thoughts, prayers and support are definitely appreciated.

Thankfully, I'm still able to teach and sing, though it's hard for me to stand for very long. I'm hoping to start performing with Global Jazz again within a couple months. Unfortunately, it turns out that Mojito can no longer have live music, so we are looking for other venues. In the meantime, I'm doing shorter, more mellow solo and duo performances to keep me going. It's funny that since I've been taking a break, people keep coming up to me, telling me they're seeing my name everywhere and how glad they are I'm performing so much!

It was really wonderful to perform my original songs and poetry at Patrick's Cabaret in January!
It meant so much to play my original piano pieces in public for the first time to such an enthusiastic audience! I'm taking piano lessons again and really exploring more than I have in a long time.

Thank you to Wendy Mui for inviting me to sing for the MN Chinese Service Center's annual Chinese New Year Party! It was really an honor for me and great to see the lively Chinese community come together.

Valentine's Day - As life-threatening experiences tend to do, I've been taking another look at my life – what I'm grateful for, what I want to change. One thing I'm grateful for is some of the wonderful guys I've gotten a chance to spend time with in the past 5 years. Here's wishing that we all find someone really good for us to love.

- Karen Lyu

Walker Community Church
3104 16th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN (East of Bloomington)
Info: 612-327-0050, www.handinhand12.org

Lee Gordon is cofounder of the inspiring Jewish and Arab Hand in Hand integrated bilingual schools in Israel. These schools have been amazingly successful at bringing Jewish and Arab children, families, teachers and communities together to learn. Lee has asked me to sing before he shares about some of the powerful experiences and people who have turned these schools into close-knit communities. Donations will go to help build a third Hand in Hand School for the many children that are now on a waiting list!

When I received permission from the legendary Lebanese composer Marcel Khalife to sing his song "Asfur" (about Palestine) for the Karen Lyu & Global Jazz Live CD, he asked that the royalties from the song be donated. After Hand in Hand Schools received the donation, Lee contacted me, and I'm excited that he is able to come to Minneapolis! Note: I'll be updating the website with other dates and locations of where he will be speaking as they get confirmed.
