"Karen Lyu is a dedicated singer. I have known her since the late 1990s when she was living and performing in the Twin Cities. Besides singing with her band, she likes to dance ballroom.
In 2002, my wife Carol and I hired Karen and her band to sing at our wedding reception at a ballroom. She did not just sing in English, but could do so in many languages e.g. Spanish, Portuguese...
She had learned a few new songs in Vietnamese for our reception. One of them was “Qua cầu gió bay” which means “the wind blows when we cross the bridge”. It’s a popular love song in traditional Vietnamese style. Her Vietnamese was flawless even though she did not know it.
Her voice was exquisite.
We had approximately 300 attending the reception which was open to anyone who knew us. There were three teams of instructors teaching Viennese Waltz, Argentine Tango, and Salsa mini-lessons. Many were ballroom friends dancing to her live music.
It was an unforgettable event that my friends and I are still talking about.
